A methodology for estimating the methane emissions from waste landfills in Hanoi, Vietnam, as part of a case study on Asian
cities, was derived based on a survey of documents and statistics related to waste management, interviews with persons in
charge, and field investigations at landfill sites. The waste management system in Hanoi was analyzed to evaluate the methane
emissions from waste landfill sites. The quantity of waste deposited into the landfill was evaluated from an investigation
of the waste stream. The composition of municipal waste was surveyed in several districts in the Hanoi city area, and the
quantities of degradable organic waste that had been deposited into landfill for the past 15 years were estimated. Field surveys
on methane emissions from landfills of different ages (0.5, 2, and 8 years) were conducted and their methane emissions were
estimated to be 120, 22.5, and 4.38 ml/min/m2, respectively. The first-order reaction rate of methane generation was obtained as 0.51/year. Methane emissions from waste
landfills were calculated by a first-order decay model using this emission factor and the amount of landfilled degradable
waste. The estimates of methane emissions using the model accorded well with the estimates of the field survey. These results
revealed that methane emissions from waste landfills estimated by regional-specific and precise information on the waste stream
are essential for accurately determining the behavior of methane emissions from waste landfills in the past, present, and
future. 相似文献

In this work, an estimate of the elevation of airborne lead concentrations via the lead solder contained in domestic electricity installations and an investigation into the effects of human exposure were conducted using a simulation method. The elevation of airborne lead concentrations due to incineration was calculated to be 0.001 µg/m3 maximum. The simulation results of the calculations indicated that blood lead concentrations could reach as high as 10−5 µg/dl. These concentrations could primarily be attributed to the inhalation of airborne lead particles. In addition, we discuss the influences of lead solder disposal on the ecosystem via soil and water. 相似文献

Animal bedding made of waste wood samples from seven different plants in Japan were chemically analyzed in terms of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/DFs), coplanar polychlorinated biphenyls (Co-PCBs), drin compounds, chlordane compounds and various inorganic toxic compounds (Cr, Cu, As, B, Cd and Pb) to investigate the chemical characteristics and levels of contamination. Further investigation was conducted to determine the success of applying the Chemically Activated Luciferase Expression (CALUX) bioassay to the waste wood samples in combination with a cleanup procedure for the detection of dioxin-like compounds in order to develop the CALUX bioassay as a rapid and cost-effective screening/monitoring method and a contributive tool to risk management in the waste wood recycling process. For the cleanup procedure, crude extracts from wood samples were prepared by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)/n-hexane extraction, and then the extracts were processed by silica gel-44% sulfuric acid reflux treatment at 70 degrees C for 60 min to yield the bioassay fractions. The presence of POPs and inorganic toxic compounds were confirmed in most of the litter samples. In particular, Co-PCBs in one sample (litter dust) showed a high concentration level (1200000 pg/g, 240 pg TEQ/g), suggesting the potential for contamination from demolition waste. The CALUX assay-determined TEQs (CALUX-TEQs) were significantly high in the sample after DMSO/n-hexane extraction, probably due to labile aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) ligands such as PAHs; however, they were remarkably reduced through a single silica gel-44% sulfuric acid reflux treatment. The ratio between CALUX-TEQ values and WHO toxicity equivalent values (WHO-TEQ) obtained by congener-specific chemical analysis ranged from 0.058 to 22 and show comparatively good agreement. Underestimation in some samples, however, was observed where WHO-TEQ values of Co-PCBs contributed greatly to total WHO-TEQ values. Reasons for this gap could be lower CALUX assay-determined relative potencies (REPs) than the WHO-TEFs for these congeners or AhR-antagonistic effects of non dioxin-like PCBs which coexist at higher concentration than Co-PCBs. The CALUX assay is proposed as a promising application in the recycling process of wooden materials. 相似文献

Evolution of caste is a central issue in the biology of social insects. Comparative studies on their morphology so far suggest
the following three patterns: (1) a positive correlation between queen–worker size dimorphism and the divergence in reproductive
ability between castes, (2) a negative correlation among workers between morphological diversity and reproductive ability,
and (3) a positive correlation between queen–worker body shape difference and the diversity in worker morphology. We conducted
morphological comparisons between castes in Pachycondyla luteipes, workers of which are monomorphic and lack their reproductive ability. Although the size distribution broadly overlapped,
mean head width, head length, and scape length were significantly different between queens and workers. Conversely, in eye
length, petiole width, and Weber’s length, the size differences were reversed. The allometries (head length/head width, scape
length/head width, and Weber’s length/head width) were also significantly different between queens and workers. Morphological
examinations showed that the body shape was different between queens and workers, and the head part of workers was disproportionately
larger than that of queens. This pattern of queen–worker dimorphism is novel in ants with monomorphic workers and a clear
exception to the last pattern. This study suggests that it is possible that the loss of individual-level selection, the lack
of reproductive ability, influences morphological modification in ants. 相似文献
